1.4.2 Communicating order
From the earliest times, symbols have been used to develop ideas of social cohesion notably by helping to maintain rituals and ceromonies. For example, it is now thought that Paleolithic cave art made 35,000 years ago served to hold together a symbolically sustained social network within and between 'cave communities'.
