The MMNR population is currently below the often
quoted minimum viable population of 50 individuals. However, when
this is considered alongside the ecologically connected population
in the SNP, the current shortfall is only around 10 individuals.
Although inward translocation is often suggested as a way to solve
this problem, this would need careful consideration in the case of
the MMNR due to the population’s indigenous genetic status.
MMNR management and KWS will therefore assess the need for inward
translocation of additional individuals following on from the
studies implemented through Action 1.4 above, which aim to
establish the primary causes of slow population growth in the MMNR,
and from ongoing KWS-led studies in the area focusing on genetics
and long-term population dynamics.
